STEP 18 – LOW MOTIVATION AND APATHY

broken image

Apathy is a lack of interest in life, in activities, or in interacting with others.

LOW MOTIVATION AND APATHY can affect anyone at any time, but it is usually experienced in the short term. A period of feeling disinterested or unmotivated about work or daily tasks is a normal human experience called situational apathy.

But when experienced consistently and coupled with emotional detachment, especially about things that once brought joy and happiness, this is usually a symptom of severe low mood and it can affect relationships, employment, and, consequently, life.

Apathy can result from an underlying medical condition, particularly those that affect the brain, or it can manifest for no apparent reason. Teenagers often have periods of apathy, but this should pass in time.

Long term apathy is not normal.

Symptoms of apathy include a lack of motivation to begin or complete tasks, diminished or flat emotions, an unwillingness to act in addressing personal problems, and a general disinterest in everything. You may notice that it is difficult to engage an apathetic person in conversation.
