STEP 11 – EATING PATTERNS

One of the most common signs of persistent low mood is a change in EATING PATTERNS—especially if it is fairly sudden.

When feeling low, many tend to overeat, choosing “comfort foods,” a name given to emotional eating to fulfil a sense of emotional emptiness or feelings of worthlessness.

Eating foods that have a positive association with happier times in the past can be uplifting to the mood and so that feeling becomes desirable. Also, certain foods can give an emotional lift because they increase serotonin levels in the brain. This is a crucial chemical or neurotransmitter that helps us to feel happy and secure.

However, some experience the opposite effect: a loss of appetite, so that it becomes a struggle to eat much at all. They either don’t care about food anymore, or may lack interest in and motivation for cooking, lacking the energy to prepare meals.

This may lead to avoidance of nutritional foods, choosing instead to pick at high-sugar processed foods that are quick and easy to prepare but have little nutritional content. Others may have physical symptoms such as nausea or bloating.

Identifying the emotions behind the eating patterns is important and qualified health professionals can help with this.
